I knew nothing of Richard Lalor Sheil until a few weeks ago, when I heard excerpts from his speeches, as I was listening to "Farnsworth's Classical English Rhetoric." My five-star review of Farnsworth's book appears under the heading, "Oratory: eloquent, effective, emotional -- especially Richard Lalor Sheil." Indeed, Mr. Sheil was a lively, engaging, insightful, intriguing, and extremely intelligent orator. His speeches are masterpieces. But his stories are even better! And "Sketches of the Irish Bar" is loaded with 'em. Some funny. Some not funny. Some both. (For example, Lord Norbury brings to mind what Hannah Arendt wrote re: administrative killings conducted "in a spirit of play.") Be that as it may, Mr. Sheil's "Sketches" are packed with great writing that makes for gripping reading. (For example, "The Burning of the Sheas" and "The Murder of Daniel Mara.") N.B. Throughout "Sketches," there is always something that is either lurking in the background or rearing its ugly head. That ubiquitous "something" is the Anglican Protestants' distinctly religious oppression of the Irish Catholics. (For example, please see Mr. Sheil's analysis of Arthur Young's "A Tour In Ireland 1776-1779.") P.S. In my five-star review of Arthur Young's book, I could not resist the urge to bring Mr. Sheil into the discussion. I did so by quoting, quite liberally, from his "Sketches." I hope he won't mind.
